Aflao is a border town in Ghana’s Volta Region, situated on the Ghanaian side of the Ketu South District bordering Togo. Judging by population, Aflao is the 28th most populous town in Ghana. The municipality of the town is governed by a mayor and council system.
The Ghanaian president appoints the mayor, who is then confirmed by the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, the town council. With an annual cycle of rainy and dry seasons, the climate of Aflao is tropical savanna. The dry season takes place from end of year to February.
Typically, the rainy season lasts from April through July or from September through October. While the mean monthly temperature often runs from 24 to 30 °C, the average annual rainfall falls between 850 and 1,000 mm.
PERSONALITIES
Ablah Dzifa Gomashie is a veteran actress, producer, screenwriter, and politician from Ghanaia. During the National Democratic Congress’s tenure from 2013 to 2017, she served as the Deputy Minister of Tourism under President John Dramani Mahama.
She is currently the queen-mother of the Aflao Traditional Area and the NDC’s parliamentary candidate in the Ketu South Constituency.
CULTURE
The celebration known as the Aflao Godigbeza is celebrated by the Aflao people in Ghana. Every alternate year, in October, people rejoice to commemorate the victorious mass exodus of the Aflao people from the oppressive reign of King Agorkoli of Notsie.
The celebration honors the history of the people’s migration from Notsie, which is now in Togo. The leaders of Aflao join together in a lavish durbar to commemorate the holiday.
